SSD – the future of Desktop storage?
After ticker-tape and punched cards came hard drives, and they have been with us since IBM stacked fifty 24” disks together to form a drive capable of storage a huge 4.4MB! Believe it or not, this happened in 1956.
The modern hard drive is the product, then, of some 50 years evolution, resulting in speeds and capacities many hundreds of times that of IBM’s original. But even these modern storage heroes are now in danger of being made obsolete by a new kid on the block – the SSD (Solid State Drive).
These “drives” are really just special memory chips that do not lose their information when the power is turned off. They are currently attracting a premium over hard drives but over time this will diminish as demand increases, and trust us, demand WILL increase! An SSD-equipped laptop can boot Windows 7 in around 40 seconds and even the largest applications load virtually instantly. SSD should really stand for “Seriously Speedy Disk”. Look out for more and more machines coming with these drives and if one is within financial reach, grab it and don’t look back!
Our engineers at Nemark have tried them with Windows 7 and they are very impressed!
