Speakers, making the iPhone heard!
We get asked, quite often, what the best way is to enhance the frankly pathetic inbuilt speaker of the Apple iPhone. The answer, as is typical for technology-related questions, seems to change on a regular basis depending on new product releases, price, availability and specific requirements.
A case in point is the “Altec Lansing inMotion iPhone speaker”. This is a battery-powered speaker unit meaning you don’t get continuous long-time playing (although the claimed 24 hours is impressive) but you do get total portability without having to worry about cables. Since the unit takes just 4x AA batteries, carrying a spare set is no hardship either.
The unit is thoughtfully designed, and includes a cover to protect the speakers when in transit. It forms a stand and the iPhone fits snugly in the middle.
This being said, then, it comes right down to price and sound quality, the estimation of both being entirely subjective being based on your pocket and ear respectively. At £60 (estimated) we don’t think it’s very expensive, but the sound matches this, being good for casual “kitchen radio” types of listening, rather than as a room-filling audio system for the lounge. If you’re very mobile or not a total audiophile, they may be worth checking out. If you’re really into your music, you might need to put your hand a little further into your pocket and go for a set of speakers that will match your tuned ear like the Bowers & Wilkins – mmmmmmm!
